Senate to screen Sanusi's replacement, Godwin Emefiele, on March 26.

Senate Ready To Screen Jonathan’s Nominee For Sanusi's Replacement

Senate is set for screening of President Goodluck Jonathan’s nominee as the substantive Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Senate President David Mark revealed that the screening and confirmation of the appointment of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as the President of the Court of Appeal is also scheduled for March 26, 2014, Wednesday. Both of the procedures will be televised LIVE.

Mark announced this during Tuesday’s plenary, after seeking the approval of senators for the appointment of the two nominees to be considered and confirmed.

A spokesperson of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, later explained the journalists why screening of Emefiele before the expiration of Sanusi’s tenure in June is within the frames of the Constitution.

“There is nothing in the Constitution that says we should screen the new person only after the tenure of the incumbent.

“In fact, good sense means that we should screen the new person and go through all the processes so that on the day the tenure of the incumbent ends, he can handover to his successor,” the spokesperson said.

It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan nominated the Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc, Godwin Emefiele, on February 20, 2014, a few hours after ousting then Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on allegations of financial reckless and misconduct.

Bulkachuwa's candidature was forwarded to the Senate for confirmation on March 19, 2014.
