PHOTOS: Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue shoots lightning bolt during a storm?

lightening

This is a rare picture depicting the moment when the huge 100-foot tall statue of Jesus towering over the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro was hit by a bolt of lightening.

The iconic statue which is referred to as Christ the Redeemer, was struck in the early hours of Wednesday, January 15, when a spectacular electrical storm lit up the entire sky.

Standing more than 2,000 feet above Rio, on top of the Corcovado Hill, is the largest stone-work of Jesus ever built.

After it was struck by lightening in February 2008, it had to undergo a serious restoration because the bolt damaged its head and fingers. See more photos below:

The statue which is made of 700 tonnes of reinforced concrete, has also been named as one of the 7 new wonders of the world in 2007
