Parents from hell: Couple jailed for cutting 10-year-old son’s fingers (PICTURED)
A Ghanaian father and mother have been sentenced to spend 6 months in prison after they were found guilty of assault on their son.
Morrison Adenkor and Angelina Adeti were said to have cut the fingertips of their 10-year-old child because he stole meat and coins.
The couple was found guilty of causing harm and were indicted for violating the child’s rights.
According to reports:
However, in delivering her judgement, the court took into account factors, including the nature of the crime, the circumstances of the accused persons and the fact that they were first-time offenders.
Sentencing the accused persons – Morrison Adenkor and Angelina Adeti – the presiding judge, Ms Ellen Vivian Amoah, warned that the court would not sit aloof while the rights
of children were trampled upon.
The court found their action repugnant and a gross violation of the 1992 Constitution and all international conventions Ghana has ratified to protect and safeguard the interest of children.
“What type of parents do this kind of thing to their child of 10 years who is supposed to look up to them. Secondly, what has become the norm in our society where adults and society in general cherishes children? What could enter the mind of a father to cut open all the 10 fingers of his son with the tacit consent of the mother?”
“We have to bear in mind that we owe rights and obligations to the most vulnerable members of our society, that is the children”, Ms Amoah said.

‘He smashed the baby on concrete’: Man arrested for killing 2-year-old boy after an argument with his mum
A man in Ondo has been arrested after reports that he killed a toddler after having an argument with his mother.
Ayelehin Kehinde is said to have caused the death of the 2-year-old after he grabbed him off his mother’s back and smashed him on the concrete ground.
The incident occurred in the Supare, Akoko area of the state and the child was said to have died on the way to a hospital.
Vanguard reports:
The suspect, who is now in police custody, reportedly pulled the baby boy, who was sleeping, from the back of her mother and smashed him on the concrete floor.
Vanguard gathered that the mother of the deceased boy was accused by the suspect of giving out information about him to police detectives who recently raided his house.
It was learnt that some detectives stormed the area recently asking questions concerning complaints from some leaders in the area over the activities of some people with questionable character.
Vanguard learnt that someone may have leaked the information to the suspect that his
name was mentioned to the detectives who visited the area.
Irked by this information, the suspect was said to have stormed the woman’s residence and accused her of giving false information about him to the police.
An argument reportedly ensued which later degenerated to a free-for-all and in annoyance, the suspect was said to have pulled the baby backed by her mother and hit him on the concrete floor.
The baby’s head was reportedly smashed with blood gushing out from the nose, ears and mouth.
The suspect was said to have attempted to flee but was overpowered by the neighbours who took him to the police station where he was detained.

Defence Headquarters Begins ‘Specialized Campaign’ Against Boko Haram In North East
The Defence Headquarters on Thursday said that the military has launched a “Specialised Campaign” to combat insurgents in the northeastern part of the country.
The campaign is being carried out simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states – three states which are under state of emergency to curb the Boko Haram insurgency – to apprehend the terrorists and ensure that they do not escape out of Nigeria.
Also, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops killed six Boko Haram fighters and captured two others after attacking Michika in Adamawa State on Wednesday.
One soldier and three civilians died in the encounter with the sect’s fighters.
Defence Headquarters (DHQ) spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade spoke in Abuja.
Gen. Olukolade said: “The purpose of this briefing is to intimate you with the elevation of counter-terrorism campaign in the country.
“The new approach marks another phase in the operations designed to further contain the terrorists and their activities.
“The specialised campaign, which has commenced, is being undertaken simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states. This operation is also in furtherance of efforts at apprehending the terrorists and ensuring they do not escape out of Nigeria as they are now so desperate to do”.
On the recent massacre of scores of students of the Federal Government College Buni-Yadi, Gujba LGA of Yobe State, Olukolade said, “The Defence Headquarters acknowledges with grave concern the recent mindless killing of innocent school children and other citizens in towns and villages following terrorist activities in some parts of the Northeast.
“The dastardly act has expectedly attracted the reaction of well-meaning individuals who have been condemning the senseless bloodletting.
“Disturbing as this trend proves, the fact remains that the chilling episodes are simply typical of terrorists’ intention to intimidate the people into subscribing to their false claim to invincibility.
“This distressing situation notwithstanding, it must be pointed out that the current activities of the terrorist groups are actually at best a reaction to the renewed offensive against the terror outfit whose operatives had infiltrated the country to support their hitherto depleted membership and counterparts in their daring acts to reinvent relevance by embarking on renewed attacks on soft targets”.
He also gave an insight into the sect’s attack on Michika on Wednesday night.
He said: “Unfortunately, however, they have in the course of their flight towards various borders, continued to perpetrate mayhem as noticed in some parts of Adamawa State yesterday night where they attacked communities.
“In desperation for money and food, they looted and burnt banks, shops and filling stations along their way through Michika as they headed for Cameroon border.
“Six of their fighters were killed, two captured while nine of their vehicles were destroyed. One soldier and three civilians also died in the encounter.
“It is believed that those involved in this latest attacks are the elements that perpetrated the mayhem against students of Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State and other places.
“They have been holed up and are still engaged in suicidal fighting, apparently with a view to attaining martyrdom status, as troops close in on the die-hard ones among them”.
The Defence spokesperson pleaded with Nigerians in insurgency prone areas to report suspicious movements to security agencies.
He said: “Citizens in these states, particularly towards border areas, are requested to assist the security forces by reporting any movement of the group, if noticed in their locality, as it would further enhance the operations as well as assist in apprehending or eliminating them. All things being equal, the activities of this murderous group will be further degraded towards total elimination shortly.
“Citizens are enjoined to show understanding of the situation and continue to cooperate with the security forces, especially with vital and timely information on the movements of these terrorists to enable quick response accordingly”.

23-Year Old Man Forces Girlfriend To Drink Conc. Acid For Dumping Him
A 23-year-old man, Christian Samuel, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Prison by an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Ijeoma Nwachukwu.
And according to Punch, the police said Samuel forced Ijeoma, 26, who he had been dating for sometime to drink acid while they were together at Cossy-Inn Hotel, Abule-Oshun, Lagos State. 23 years old Samuel had found out Ijeoma got engaged to another man without telling him. He pretended as if nothing happened and invited the deceased to the hotel on January 11, 2014, then allegedly forced her to drink the acid, leading to her death.
It was learnt that Samuel abandoned Ijeoma’s corpse in the hotel and fled. The owner of the hotel, Olusegun Sangojumo, discovered the corpse, but did not report to the police. Instead, the 64-year-old called his manager, Kehinde Ajibola, and one of the workers, Azeez Olaitan, to dispose of the corpse at the Mile 2 end of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The police eventually discovered the corpse and in the course of investigation, rounded up all the suspects.
While Samuel was arraigned for murder, the other three suspects were arraigned and granted bail for accessory after the fact. The matter has been adjourned till April 2, 2014 pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Nigerians Slam President Goodluck Jonathan Over Media Chat Answers
Nigerians this morning slammed President Goodluck Jonathan over his responses to questions he was asked last night during a media chat session, with some saying his answers portrayed unnecessary arrogance while he made efforts to hide salient truths.
The President had stated that he had absolute power to suspend the Governor of Central Bank, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
He suspended Sanusi last week over some allegations that the latter claimed he was not aware of.
Jonathan also condemned governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State for saying the Boko Haram terrorists currently waging war in his state were more armed than the Nigerian soldiers, saying he could remove the soldiers from the state for one month to know if the governor would remain in office.
"If governor of Borno feels the military are that useless against Boko Haram, I can pull out the military for one month and see what happens there and after I can send the military back to take charge.
The governor should be sensitive in his choice of words. It’s unfortunate,” Jonathan had said.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in his reaction, said he expected the President to even show some emotional attachment to the victims of the Boko Haram massacre “I deeply respect the office of the president, but I believe the Commander-In-Chief needs to show some more compassion for the affected families.
The 20 abducted school girls still remain unfound. A word of compassion would have given hope to their families. I’m very sad,” he said on his Twitter handle.
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, said Governor Shettima is only asking for more help and more troops from the Federal Government because hundreds more of his people are being killed and abducted everyday by the Boko Haram “and this is the best response that our President can give to him?”
“Are those being killed and abducted not Nigerians? Would this have been his response if 8000 of his own Ijaw people had been killed in the last three years by a terrorist organisation? May God save and deliver Nigeria,” he said in a post attributed to him on Facebook.
Popular rights activist, Biodun Sowunmi, said that though the President’s presentation was better than before, he only ended up drawing himself into more controversies over the sack of Sanusi.
He said the President goofed as he should have declined commenting after being told that Sanusi had gone to court since it would be subjudice.
He also carpeted the President for saying he had the power to suspend Sanusi, because according to him, the only way he could have done that was if Sanusi’s professional body derobed him as stipulated in the CBN Act.
Concerning his response on the carnage in Borno, Sowunmi said he was surprised that President Jonathan had refused to visit the scene like it is done by presidents in other climes, but could utter statements threatening the state governor for his own inability to curtail terrorism as the Commander -In-Chief.
“It is the governor who had been visiting the places and he is rightly emotional,” he said describing Jonathan’s statement as unfortunate.
Sowunmi, who said he was not defending Sanusi, said the CBN Governor acted in line with the constitution that all monies should be remitted to the federation account first, which the NNPC and other related agencies disregarded.
“What Jonathan did with his responses was to try to divert attention from the missing $20 billion,” he added.
President of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, Debo Adeniran, supported Sowunmi, adding that the only area the President responded well was on the National Conference in which he said he did not want to preside over a disintegrating country.
“Every other response was half-truth, borne out of arrogance, justification for insolence, watery and untenable,” he said, adding that the President must remember that nobody has absolute powers as he had claimed.
Wondering why it took the President Sanusi’s whistle-blowing for him to know that Sanusi had committed some infringements, he said the way the President chastised Shettima was a show of arrogance and ploy to suppress the truth instead of working on what the governor said.
He recalled that the Deputy Governors at the CBN were also indicted but that the President chose to punish only Sanusi, saying the President should also step aside for the corruption scandal that has enveloped his government to be investigated.
“Look at the power project that has gulped over $16 billion, look at Arumna Oteh of Securities and Exchange Commission, look at Diezani Alison-Madueke and Jonathan is attacking those who blew the whistle leaving those accused of corruption, ” he lamented.
Shettima Yerima of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, simply said: “it would be shameful if President Jonathan can prove that Sanusi soiled his hands while at the CBN, but if at the end of the investigation, he is not found wanting, then the President should be prepared for the anger of the north because he molested their son.”
On Jonathan’s reaction to the Borno attack, a Nigerian, Eweje Alli, said: “I saw the interview and was shocked to hear those words coming from the President of a Republic. God help Nigerians.”

FOOTBALL: Robin van Persie blasts team mates over Manchester United's 2 - 0 loss to Olympiakos
Manchester United striker Robin van Persie was fuming at his teammates' positioning in their 2-0 defeat to Greek outfit Olympiacos in their first-leg Round of 16 Champions League tie on Tuesday evening.
The Dutchman blamed his fellow players for infringing upon his areas on the pitch, causing him to adjust his game and be out of position.
"Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in,” the United forward told Dutch TV channel NOS after the match. “And when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well.
“So that forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And unfortunately, they're often playing in my zones. I think that's a shame."Van Persie refused to blame manager David Moyes for the defeat, calling upon the players to lift their game themselves.
“It's easy to point the finger at someone, but I'm not like that,” he said. “We have to do better ourselves."
"It was much too slow today and we only had one shot on target in the whole match against Olympiakos, which is far too little. Everyone is very disappointed."
The 30-year-old believes his side can still do the business when they meet the Greek Champions in the second leg at Old Trafford next month.
"It is still possible, because with all due respect to Olympiacos, we should be able to win 3-0 at home," he said.

Judge Orders Unemployed Men To Stop Having S3x As They Cannot Pay Child Support
During sentencing, Judge Abednico Ndebele said that being unemployed is not an excuse for not taking care of children.
Unemployed men were surprised when Ndebele said that they should stop having sx, as it could lead to pregnancy and not paying child support.
“If you are unemployed, you should not have sx and stay away from women since you can no longer afford to care for children,” Ndebele said.
Zivanai Chitima of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was held in contempt of court after he stopped paying $55 a month in child support to his former wife.
Chitima reportedly owes his estranged wife $375 in back child support.
He was ordered to pay or face jail time. The man had argued that he could not afford to pay $55 each month to his wife Ndanetsei Nyandoro because he does not have a job.
The judge sentenced Chitima to 3 months in jail after which he will have to find a way to pay his child support.

SANUSI REVEALS: They Are Using Subsidy Money To Buy Big Mansions In The US and Switzerland
Regarding the allegations against him, the suspended CBN chief said when he heard of a report condemning his performance, he wrote to Jonathan asking if an explanation is needed, but he received no reply.
He said, unfortunately, the first time he was formally notified of the allegations against him was the day he was suspended, that is Thursday last week. But Reuben Abati had lied to the media that Sanusi was queried for the alleged offences and he replied the Presidency.
According to Sanusi, the so-called kerosene subsidy money spent by the Federal Government in fact pays for “private jets, yachts and expensive mansion (of top public office holders) in Beverly Hills (United States) and Switzerland.
”He added that, “Since 2009, I have been annoying the government… There are people who think I have the wrong friends; people who think maybe I have not distanced myself enough from people who are seen to be opposition figures.”
Sanusi argued that the extent of graft in the NNPC might have reached an historic high. “I think everybody has known that NNPC is rotten. I don’t think it has ever been as bad as this,” he said.
Reacting to plans to arrest and keep him out of circulation, Sanusi said: “If I am sacrificed in whatever way, my freedom or my life… if it does lead to better accountability, it will be well worth it.”

Last member of 'Sound of Music' family, Maria Von Trapp, passes away
Von Trapp was the last surviving member of the Austrian family of seven brothers and sisters and died in her sleep at her Vermont home. "It was a surprise that she was the one in the family to live the longest because ever since she was a child she suffered from a weak heart," family friend Marianne Dorfer told the Austrian Times.
"It was the fact that she suffered from this that her father decided to hire Maria von Trapp to teach her and her brothers and sisters," she continued. "That of course then led to one of the most remarkable musical partnerships of the last century."
Indeed, as the second-eldest daughter, Von Trapp and her family famously escaped the Nazis in the 1930s for a better life in the states. Their journey was the inspiration for Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1959 broadway hit, and in 1965, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer then starred in its film adaptation.
(According to the Times, Trapp's first visit back to Austria after escaping was in 2008.)
Last December, country singer Carrie Underwood took on the role of Von Trapp in NBC's The Sound of Music Live! production. The live television adaptation sparked both positive and negative praise, and pulled in 18.47 million viewers.
