NEXT CBN GOVERNOR: Tony Elumelu, Imuokhude favoured to succeed Sanusi

It is no longer news that the incumbent Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi will cease to occupy the coveted position come April, following his fallout with the presidency over unaccounted billions of dollar to the Federation Account by NNPC, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation. Though, Sanusi had earlier hinted that he was no longer interested in the job.

Nigeria needs a CBN Governor who understands the importance of growth and Nation Building and support to Small Businesses.

It’s no longer news that the preparation for the apex financial body in Nigeria, the CBN to shop for a replacement for the Lamido Sanusi is in top gear. This search for a competent replacement for the incumbent governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has become the trending topic in financial circles.

What has become a subject of discussion out there now is the possibility of who gets the plum and exalted position of the CBN governor between these two banking gurus, Tony Elumelu former boss United Bank of

Africa who is now the Chairman of H.E.I.R.S Holdings Limited and Aig-Imuokhude, Managing Director, Access Bank .

Rumour has it that before now one of the top names being tipped for that enviable position in the banking sector in Nigeria, Central Bank of Nigeria governor was Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede who was described as the most favoured candidate of President Goodluck Jonathan. Obviously, there are two sides to a coin; the other side of the coin seems to be falling on Tony as he’s being considered to have an edge above Aig in the area of experience and exposure.

Another reason we learnt is that the presidency does not want to limit the option to just Aig hence a stronger contender like Tony.

Scientists discover wonder drug to block HIV/AIDS

Research led by scientists at the Gladstone Institutes, San Fransisco, United States has identified the precise chain of molecular events in the human body that drives the death of most of the immune system’s CD4 T cells as an HIV infection leads to AIDS. Further, they have identified an existing anti-inflammatory drug that in laboratory tests blocks the death of these cells — and now are planning a Phase 2 clinical trial to determine if this drug or a similar drug can prevent HIV-infected people from developing AIDS and related conditions.

Two separate journal articles, published simultaneously in Nature and Science, detail the research from the laboratory of Warner C. Greene, MD, PhD, who directs virology and immunology research at Gladstone, an independent biomedical-research non-profit. His laboratory’s science paper reveals how, during an HIV infection, a protein known as IFI16 senses fragments of HIV DNA in abortively infected immune cells. This triggers the activation of the human enzyme caspase-1 and leads to pyroptosis, a fiery and highly inflammatory form of cell death. As revealed in the Nature paper, this repetitive cycle of abortive infection,

cell death, inflammation and recruitment of additional CD4 T cells to the infection “hot zone” ultimately destroys the immune system and causes AIDS. The Nature paper further describes laboratory tests in which an existing anti-inflammatory inhibits caspase-1, thereby preventing pyroptosis and breaking the cycle of cell death and inflammation.

“Gladstone has made two important discoveries, first by showing how the body’s own immune response to HIV causes CD4 T cell death via a pathway triggering inflammation, and secondly by identifying the host DNA sensor that detects the viral DNA and triggers this death response,” said Robert F. Siliciano, MD, PhD, a professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. “This one-two punch of discoveries underscores the critical value of basic science — by uncovering the major cause of CD4 T cell depletion in AIDS. Dr Greene’s laboratory has been able to identify a potential new therapy for blocking the disease’s progression and improving on current antiretroviral medications.”

The research comes at a critical time, as so-called AIDS fatigue leads many to think that HIV/AIDS is solved. In fact, HIV infected an additional 2.3 million people last year, according to UNAIDS estimates, bringing the global total of HIV-positive people to 35.3 million. Antiretroviral medications (ARVs) can prevent HIV infections from causing AIDS, but they do not cure AIDS. Further, those taking ARVs risk both a latent version of the virus, which can rebound if ARVs are discontinued, and the premature onset of diseases that normally occur in aging populations. Plus, some 16 million people who carry the virus do not have access to ARVs, according to World Health Organization estimates.

Seeking solutions for all these challenges, the new Gladstone discovery builds on earlier research from Dr. Greene’s lab, published in Cell in 2010. This study showed how HIV attempts, but fails, to productively infect most of the immune system’s CD4 T cells. In an attempt to protect the body from the spreading virus, these immune cells then commit “cellular suicide,” leading to the collapse of the immune system — and AIDS.

After that research, the Gladstone scientists began to look for ways to prevent this process by studying exactly how the suicidal response is initiated. Working in the laboratory with human spleen and tonsil tissue, as well as lymph-node tissue from HIV-infected patients, the researchers found that these so-called abortive infections leave fragments of HIV’s DNA in the immune cells. As described in Nature, pyroptosis ensues as immune cells rupture and release inflammatory signals that attract still more cells to repeat the death cycle.

Casillas reveals condition for Real Madrid exit

The Spain goalkeeper has hinted at a possible departure from the Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting he wants to play for a club where he would be considered No.1

Iker Casillas has dropped the biggest hint yet that his future lies away from Real Madrid.

The goalkeeper, who is currently understudy to Diego Lopez at the Bernabeu, has spoken of his desire to be first choice again at club level.

Casillas has been linked with a string of top European sides ahead of next summer's World Cup when he faces a battle to keep his position as Spain's No.1.

The 32-year-old was expected to attend a training camp in Doha - backed by the Iker Casillas Foundation - for around 20 specially selected, young goalkeepers from around the world.

But, due to the possibility of his wife, Sara Carbonero, giving birth to the couple's first child this week, he opted out after medical advice.

Casillas instead spoke to the keepers on a conference call on Friday, dispensing advice from his own experiences and passing on tips for career progression.

At the end of the discussion, he took questions from the group and was asked directly if he was interested in joining Manchester City, the Premier League club managed by his former Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini.

"I'm not going anywhere I'm going to be No.2," said Casillas, who is under contract with Madrid until 2017.

Casillas has been linked with City after Pellegrini recently dropped Joe Hart, but the England goalkeeper has since won his place back and started in the 2-1 victory against Liverpool on Thursday.

But, intriguingly, the Spanish icon - who has a record 152 caps for his country - has left the door open for any club where he would be guaranteed to be first choice.

7 Reasons Why Women Break Up With Men, But Shouldn’t

Everybody has that one relationship they forever regret ending - the one that, after doing a lot more dating, they realize was actually pretty great. If you ask anyone why they ended those relationships, you can probably expect to hear one of these reasons. Here are 7 common things women feel should mark the end of a relationship that usually should not.

1. He won't move in with you yet

A lot of women have a sort of a timeline for their relationship. They believe that by some particular year (for many women it’s between year 1 and year 3) they should be moved in with their boyfriend. However, if the man fails to suggest it, or even rejects the idea when they bring it up, many women will call it quits.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

Men think about the big picture more than you give them credit for. And a lot of men, rather than thinking, “We’ve been dating for three whole years” think, “We have only been together three out of the 60-something years we might be together.” And when you look at it that way, waiting another year or two, if it could keep the relationship together, is worth it. By the way, why not to enjoy a little more time having a place all to

yourself? Probable, it will be the last time you ever do.

2. He won’t introduce you to his family yet

Women feel more pressure than men when the question of marriage arises. If they a particular age still unmarried, they become less attracted as partners. So a woman is ready to bring a guy home after just a few months of dating, just to show her family, “Hey! Look! I won’t end up alone.” However, men usually need much more time to introduce their partners to parents. Thus, many women think the guy’s just not serious about them.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

Women are far more comfortable leaning on their family during emotionally trying times like, say, during a breakup. So they don’t mind their family knowing about every relationship that begins and ends. But men often either don’t feel comfortable turning to their family during a breakup, or don’t think it’s a burden they should put on their family, so in order for them to take a woman home, they need to feel pretty certain it’s the woman they’ll marry. Meanwhile females don’t need to know they’ll marry a male to take him home: they just need to believe they can be happy for a few years for now. But for men, bringing a woman home is his subtle way of saying, “She’s the one.” That’s worth waiting for.

3. He won’t propose yet

And here we touch upon timeline again: a lot of women believe that if a man doesn’t propose by some particular year x, he’s just never going to. And they believe that if a guy goes silent when the subject of marriage comes up, he’ll definitely never propose.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

The truth is that women are usually always certain of their feelings for a guy long before the men are certain of their feelings for a woman. You know it’s true: you probably had to hold back your giddiness about your guy in the first few months - or even a year - until his enthusiasm caught up. But then, when he was in, he was all in. Almost every woman feels ready to marry her partner before her partner feels ready to marry her. Your man is normal, there is nothing wrong about it. So long as he talks about the far away future with you comfortably, there’s nothing to worry about.

4. You’re consumed by insecurities

Hey, we’re all head-trips. We all down-spiral into these hurricanes of insecurities, thinking that our partner would be better suited with a woman the complete opposite of ourselves, thinking we’ll turn out just like our mothers and our marriage will turn out just like our parents’, thinking we’ll get fat the moment we get married. Many women get so consumed by insecurities, but are far too proud to bring them up to their partner, so, rather than live in turmoil, they just end the relationship, leaving a very confused man behind.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

Well, your boy has seen enough chick flicks you’ve dragged him to to know that women have those thoughts. He won’t think you need to be committed to the psych ward if you share your insecurities with him. If he loves you, he’ll do what’s within his means to ease those insecurities. And you know what? You’ll have those insecurities with anybody you date, so it’d be a shame to walk away from a great guy, only to date a sea of mediocre men, who will still elicit those feelings.

5. You don’t feel excited all the time

Feelings of infatuation are some of the greatest in the world. You always feel like your partner is on the exact same wavelength as you - he’s tired when you are, happy when you are, horny when you are, depressed when you are. You think, “This is what life is for! This is what marriage is supposed to be like!” So, when you suddenly feel out of sync with your partner, it’s easy to think the excitement was all hormones, and this is the wrong guy.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

We’re all subject to the same chemicals and hormones, and studies have found there is in fact an infatuation phase that ends (at around 2 or 3 years) and while that can be a let down, it only feels bad for a little bit: you’re just comparing how it is to that euphoria it used to be, so of course that will depress you. But if you stick it out, and focus on having good conversations with your partner, and doing things that you bond over, you can actually reach a new, deeper kind of excitement.

6. You feel your career is stifled

A lot of women are very driven when they’re single, but when they fall in love, something happens. Suddenly, there’s a boyfriend to see instead of attending another networking event. And suddenly it seems like it’s either got to be the boyfriend or career.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

Newsflash: this is just a problem of being self-disciplined! And if you’re not, you’ll always find something to hold you back from your career, from your social life to traveling to a new dog. A good, healthy relationship can actually enhance your career. If you bounce ideas off your partner, and lay down ground rules about days and hours you need to set aside to work, you can be mentally energized by your relationship and thrive in your work.

7. His career is stifled

There’s something so appealing about the creative, entrepreneurial types — until they are turned down the twelfth time for a grant, or they have to move into their parent’s place to save money on rent and save up capital. Some women can start to feel they’ll face a life of struggle with a partner like this, and leave.

Why it doesn’t have to end:

Guess what? A guy with a totally “stable” job could be in his parent’s house at the blink of an eye. There’s no such thing as a “stable” job—there’s only such thing as stable passion and ambition. And a man who has those will always find a way to succeed. And you know what? They tend to be happier than the guy at the “stable” job that he couldn’t care less about. If you want to be somebody’s wife one day, you’ll have to wait out hard times. So long as your partner is actually trying his hardest every day, start practicing patience now.

So dear women, please, think twice before making a decision you might later regret.

Lamar Odom Finally Takes Off His Ring

Days after Khloe Kardashian filed the divorce documents that told the world she didn’t want him to be her Lammy anymore, basketball player Lamar Odom has taken off his wedding ring.

Few days ago, Lamar was seen leaving an L.A. nightclub, and he made sure that the waiting cameramen got a good shot of the big silver wedding ring still on his finger.

But no longer. It appears that Lamar has decided to ditch his marital bling for good. Photographers snapped him wearing a black sweatshirt, black workout shorts, and holding a cell phone.however, the silver ring is nowhere in sight.

As for Khloe, she hasn’t been spotted with her ring at all since filing for divorce on December 13. Lamar

was a bit slower to take it off — perhaps trying to send the message that this decision was Khloe’s, not his — but it now seems like he’s ready to ditch the bling and make a public statement that he’s ready to move on.

Now that Khloe and Lamar have put the past behind them, it sounds like both will be moving on to a new chapter in 2014. Here’s to the new year!

This Lucky Cow Has The 'Power' To Bless Pregnant Women With Baby Boys

A five-legged cow has been hailed a miracle because when pregnant women touch its fifth hoof they give birth to baby boys.

Raj Pratap's three-year-old male calf, called Raju, has become famous in Raipur, India, since a woman with four daughters touched the animal's fifth hoof and begged for her next child to be a boy.

When she gave birth to a twin boys in February this year, word soon spread that the calf's fifth leg - a very rare condition which affects just one in every five million cows - was 'lucky'.

Since news got out about the fifth leg, Mr Pratap, a cattle herder, has been swamped by pregnant women who pay to touch the hoof - with 30 women so far stumping up around 500 rupees, around £5, for the privilege.

Amazingly, all 30 women have given birth to boys and Mr Pratap is so confident of his 'miracle calf' that he offers refunds if the baby born is a girl.

This week, on Monday (Dec 23) the cow celebrated its 33rd baby boy after a woman who touched its 'magical hoof' gave birth to triplets....all of them boys.

Mr Pratap said: "All births have been positive and have resulted in a son - and this week a woman gave birth to triplets, all of them boys.

'I don't know why this has happened to us but Raju has a gift and I want to share it with the whole world.

'Some day I dream of taking Raju to Europe or America and making every couple there happy.'

In India boys are 'more valued' than girls as they have 'greater earning potential' to support the family.

The parents of a bride are still expected to provide the groom with a dowry of cash, jewellery and other luxury items before the wedding ceremony can go ahead - despite it being outlawed in India since 1961.

One woman, who gave birth to a boy in October this year but asked not to be named, said: 'It is a gift from god - touching Raju's fifth leg has blessed me with a boy.

'My whole family is so happy that I now have a beautiful son.'

Cows are considered sacred by Hindus who believe one of their most important gods Lord Krishna to have been a cattle herder.

Across India they are allowed to roam the streets of towns and cities and it is forbidden to move them, even if they are obstructing traffic.

Man Sentenced To Death By Hanging, You Won't Believe What He Did Next

A Katsina State High Court sitting in Malumfashi on Friday sentenced one Aminu Ibrahim of Rogo Local Government in Kano State to death by hanging, for armed robbery.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict, on hearing the verdict, immediately attempted to commit suicide in the court’s cell room using an iron bar.

He was, however, overpowered by prison warders who struggled with him for minutes before pinning him down and dragging him into a waiting vehicle.

Ibrahim was convicted and sentenced by Justice Abbas Bawale for armed robbery, an offence contrary to section 1, (2) CAP. R.11 of Robbery and Firearms Act, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The charge was filed on October 13, 2011, while the offence was committed in September 2011 on Kafur-Malumfashi road, where victims were robbed of their valuables.

In his Judgment, Bawale held that the prosecution had succeeded in proving its case beyond reasonable

doubt.

He said the court was satisfied with the testimonies of the five witnesses, including some of the robbery victims and the investigating police officers, presented by the prosecution counsel, Mr. Aminu Garba.

Garba had also tendered five exhibits including a locally made gun, used fillets and a stick, all used during the commission of the crime and which were admitted by the court
